History of Pattaya

The name Pattaya has its origins from the march of Phraya Tak and his army that started in Ayutthaya and ended in Chanthaburi. Upon coming face to face with Nai Klom, the local leader of the place now known as Pattaya, Phraya Tak and his army were so impressive that the locals surrendered without a fight. The two armies merged and the place where they met was named Thap Phraya or Army of Phraya. It was later on changed to Phatthaya, which is the wind blowing from the southwest to the northeast when the rainy season starts.  Internationally, it is now known as Pattaya, but Phatthaya remains the official transliteration.

Though Pattaya is one of the most popular spots in Thailand, it wasn’t considered as such until the 60s when American servicemen started heading there for some R&R. From then on, the quaint fishing village became a much-visited beach resort.

Local Culture

In the middle of April, the Wan Lai or the Pattaya Songkran festival is celebrated differently from the rest of Thailand because it lasts longer and includes other events aside from the usual water throwing. A four-day pageant happens in May: the Miss Tiffany Beauty Pageant featuring transsexuals! In November, Pattaya Pride or Pattaya’s Gay Festival is held and the proceeds of the event are donated to HIV/AIDS charities that are active in Pattaya.
